There is also value in participating in a variety of exercises to help you stay fit. Different exercises work different muscles, so make sure to change it up. Featured Activity: Disc Golf ("Frisbee Golf")
 

Over the last 30 years a new fitness sport has emerged, which combines the fun and addicting qualities of regular golf with the fitness benefits of more strenuous sports. Disc golf is the fastest growing sport in the world, and there are already 10 million Americans who play at over 2,500 different courses in the US.

Bowling Green is considered a “Mecca” of disc golf, boasting four championship courses, and several smaller courses. Most are free to play, and the only equipment needed is a Frisbee. However, if you want to compete at a higher level of skill, you may want to purchase a few of the newer “golf discs” which are available at local sports stores. They cost only $10-18 each.

Disc golf is played basically the same as regular golf, counting your throws as "strokes" on each hole, and trying to get the frisbee into the basket in the fewest possible throws. The international rules of disc golf are posted on the official web site of the Professional Disc Golf Association.

Some basics of disc golf technique include:

  • Throw a low line drive, only 10 feet off the ground, for both greater distance and accuracy.
  • Grip using all your fingers, don’t leave your index finger on the outside of the rim.
  • "Putting" at the basket from inside 33 feet is a totally different technique to learn.
  • Release the disc at a flat angle, not with the far edge tilted down.
  • You can learn to make the throw go straight or curve either to the left or to the right.
  • Play with others so you can learn more techniques.
